For the past few years, there has been one brand that I have always made a point of looking at whenever I visit 10 Corso Como or Dover Street Market: Paul Harnden Shoemakers.

It was the bags that first caught my attention. Their designs were simple, yet the texture of the fabrics and the way they creased gave them a character I rarely found elsewhere. There were no prominent logos or unnecessary details. I liked how little they seemed to need. Even after several years, I still find myself thinking about owning one.

Founded in England by Canadian-born designer Paul Harnden, the label began with handmade shoes before expanding into clothing and accessories. Over time, it has developed a distinctive approach to design, one that draws heavily on traditional materials and methods of construction.

Much of what Paul Harnden makes has the appearance of something that has already been worn and lived in. Its clothing often features traditional fabrics, silhouettes reminiscent of old English tailoring and irregular shapes that are left deliberately unrefined. Creases and imperfections are not necessarily things to be corrected. They are part of what gives the clothes their character.

The attention paid to fabric is particularly interesting. Rather than relying solely on existing textiles, Harnden has worked with traditional British mills to develop his own weaves and colours. This consideration of material carries through to the bags. Even the simplest shape can look entirely different depending on the texture and colour of the fabric.

The way the label operates is equally distinctive. While much of the fashion industry relies on advertising campaigns, social media and celebrity partnerships, Harnden has long maintained a relatively low profile. Interviews are rare, publicity is limited and the collections are available through a small number of selected retailers.

What interests me is how closely this approach reflects the clothes themselves. There is little emphasis on logos, yet the materials and shapes are recognisable to those familiar with the label. Paul Harnden has built a following without making itself particularly visible.

Fashion moves quickly, with new collections and new names appearing every season. Yet the bags I first noticed several years ago remain just as appealing to me today.

Perhaps that is what I appreciate most about Paul Harnden Shoemakers. The designs have stayed with me long after I first saw them.
