Seoul is home to an endless number of cafes.
From global coffee chains to quietly tucked-away neighborhood spaces and refined high-end cafes, the city’s coffee culture exists in countless different forms.
As someone who has always been drawn to beautifully considered spaces and a well-made cup of coffee, I’ve spent years searching for cafes that felt truly memorable. More often than not, a place would excel at one thing while lacking another beautiful interiors paired with average coffee, or exceptional coffee served in a space that felt forgettable.
The cafes I continue to return to are the rare ones that manage to balance everything effortlessly: warm lighting, thoughtful music, understated interiors, and coffee good enough to make the entire experience feel complete.
Over the years, these spaces have quietly become part of my everyday life in Seoul. Through this piece, I wanted to introduce a few cafes that I genuinely love places for those who appreciate calm atmospheres, thoughtful design, and the quieter side of Seoul’s cafe culture.
Gonggan 21S
Located in a quiet residential neighborhood of Cheongdam-dong, Gonggan 21S is a cafe created by renovating a house. Because of its residential structure, the space feels especially warm and intimate, offering a calmer atmosphere compared to typical cafes in Seoul.
The coffee is equally memorable, with rich and well-balanced flavors that perfectly suit the atmosphere of the space. If you are looking for a relaxed cafe in Seoul to enjoy a truly good cup of coffee, this is a place I would highly recommend.
Lusso Coffee
Fresh off a major renovation completed earlier this spring, Lusso Coffee has reemerged with a noticeably more refined atmosphere. Having occupied the same corner of Cheongdam-dong for more than 15 years, the cafe remains one of the neighborhood’s longest-standing coffee institutions.
What I appreciate most about Lusso Coffee is the way it balances contemporary design with a sense of warmth that feels increasingly rare in Seoul’s cafe scene. The sleek interior flows naturally into a beautifully landscaped terrace, creating a space that feels polished without becoming overly self-conscious.
I often find myself returning here whenever I need a quiet place to work in Cheongdam-dong. While the space itself is undeniably beautiful, what truly sets Lusso Coffee apart is the quality of the coffee. In a city filled with visually impressive cafes, finding a place that takes both design and coffee seriously is surprisingly uncommon.
If you visit, I would highly recommend ordering the cafe’s signature Cube Latte.
Atelier Pond Galleria
Located on the third floor of Apgujeong Galleria, this cafe immediately stands out for its unique interior. Although relatively small in size, Atelier Pond creates a surprisingly striking atmosphere through the combination of warm wood tones and East Asian design elements.
As you look around the space, the cafe’s use of curved lines becomes especially noticeable. From the walls to the furniture, soft curves appear throughout the interior, giving the space a warm and refined feeling. According to the owner, even the tables and chairs were custom-made to match the overall mood of the cafe.
While the coffee itself is excellent, Atelier Pond is also well known for its baked desserts. If you visit, I would highly recommend trying one alongside your coffee.
Atelier Pond Hannam
Atelier Pond’s Hannam location carries a noticeably different atmosphere from the Galleria branch mentioned above. Defined by its higher ceilings and more expansive layout, the space feels calmer and far more residential in mood the kind of cafe suited for lingering over coffee rather than simply stopping by.
Beyond its pastries and desserts, the cafe also presents a selection of collaborative objects and products created with notable artists, allowing the space to feel more layered and thoughtfully curated. Combined with its warm interiors and relaxed atmosphere, Atelier Pond feels less like a typical cafe and more like a quietly refined lifestyle space tucked away in Hannam-dong.
Cafe Taschen
Located on the ground floor of the Korean Institute of Architects building, Taschen is a cafe defined by its expansive space and impressive collection of books. The interior feels more like a design library or creative workspace than a typical coffee shop, creating an atmosphere especially well suited for reading, working, or spending a slow afternoon.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Cafe Taschen is its carefully curated selection of architecture books and exhibition catalogues, many of which are difficult to come across elsewhere in Seoul. Beyond architecture, the cafe also offers a wide range of art, fashion, and design publications, making the space particularly appealing to those interested in visual culture and contemporary design.
More than just a cafe, Taschen feels like a quiet cultural space where coffee, books, and design naturally come together.
