Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Art Gallery of New South Wales was the first stop I chose for this trip to Sydney, and the approach alone made it feel like the right decision. Walking through the Royal Botanic Garden to reach the gallery, past dense green trees and people quietly enjoying their afternoon, set exactly the right pace for the day.

The gallery itself is large enough to feel genuinely varied. Sculpture, classical works, contemporary art, and a dedicated section for Asian art all sit within the same building, making it easy to spend more time than expected without the visit feeling repetitive.

But one of the main reasons I had chosen the gallery as my first stop was the restaurant.

Overlooking the Botanic Garden and the harbor at once, it offers a view that is difficult to find elsewhere in Sydney. The food matched the setting, and a staff member who took the time to walk us through the menu and offer recommendations made the meal feel even more considered. It was one of those lunches where everything came together without effort.

If you find yourself wanting a brief step away from Sydney's busier streets, the Art Gallery of NSW offers something quieter and more lasting.
